Are you looking to improve the appearance of your smile through teeth whitening? At Dr. Kent Wildern, DDS, our clients often ask us for how they can avoid yellowed teeth. While professional whitening treatments are always an option, a lot of our patients benefit from following a few simple tips.
While the first two suggestions we have listed are commonly recommended by our dentists, we can’t vouch for the rest of the whitening trends that have popped up over the Internet. Be sure to use your own discretion when trying out these tips.
Brush after eating or drinking
Oftentimes, our clients can improve the whiteness of their smile by brushing their teeth more. If you are someone who only brushes once a day, consider increasing this to twice a day. Brushing your teeth helps remove residual food particles that can stick to your teeth to create stains.
Cut or reduce tea, coffee, and wine from your diet
Certain beverages can be detrimental to having a white smile. Drinks such as tea, coffee, and wine are especially staining to your teeth. If you identify as a heavy coffee drinker, you may want to consider cutting coffee from your diet. If you don’t want to make that change, then we recommend that you at least reduce your daily intake.
Brush with baking soda and lemon juice
If you are interested in this teeth whitening method, we recommend that you alternate between using lemon juice and water. Since lemon juice is so acidic, you don’t want to run the risk of accidentally damaging your enamel from overuse. Most people who have tried this tactic notice a small change in their teeth’s whiteness.
Rinse with apple cider vinegar
Rinsing with apple cider vinegar can help clean your smile of dental staining. Alternatively, you can also create a paste that is two parts apple cider vinegar to one part baking soda, which is said to be more effective.
Use a strawberry paste
This may seem surprising, but some people claim that strawberry paste can help whiten your teeth. Some people even blend strawberries into paste that they coat their teeth with, sometimes with baking soda mix. The strawberry paste method is great for removing food particles from your teeth. However, for the whitening effect most of our patients want, you might be better off buying whitening supplies from your local grocery store. The citric nature of strawberries can also weaken your teeth if applied excessively.
With any of these methods, you have to be patient. Often, it takes time for our patients to notice any difference in the shade of their teeth while using these methods. If you’re still not having any luck, it may be worth it for you to upgrade your oral hygiene routine by using toothpaste with whitening properties. At Dr. Kent Wildern, DDS, we also offer professional treatments that are done right in our Grand Rapids office.
