Are you ready to find out how this long-term tooth replacement option could help you?

Everything from trauma to an infection can lead to tooth loss, and it doesn’t just happen to older adults, either. Of course, there is dental implantssomething you can do if you are suffering from tooth loss: dental implants. Grand Rapids, MI, dentist Dr. Kent Wildern is here to tell you about the benefits of dental implants.

What are dental implants?

Most people are looking for the next best thing to natural teeth and dental implants are the closest you can come. They are designed to look just like real teeth and even function like them, too. The implant itself is a thin small post made from a biocompatible metal like titanium that takes the place of your tooth's root.

How is an implant placed?

An implant is placed during a minor outpatient surgery. Before the procedure, we will administer local anesthesia to the gums to completely numb the treatment area. Next, we will place the implant into the jawbone. Once the implant is placed, there is a waiting period before the next step in the treatment process.

During the healing phase, which can take several months depending on the placement of the implant (upper or lower jaw) and how many implants we are placing, the jawbone will begin to bond with the dental implant. Once this is complete, our Grand Rapids, MI, dentist will often need to apply a structure known as an abutment on top the implant. The abutment serves to connect the implant with the false tooth. In most cases, if you are replacing a single tooth then a dental crown will be fabricated and then cemented into place on top of the implant to complete your restoration.

What are the benefits of implants?

Since the implant naturally melds together with bone and tissue you will have a restoration that is stable and doesn't move around, and could last you the rest of your life (if you properly care for the restoration, of course). No other tooth replacement lasts nearly as long or offers the same lifelike qualities.

Dental implants not only replace teeth but also boost confidence and enhance your appearance. If you've been afraid to smile because of missing teeth, then implants can help you regain that confidence. Also, since the implant is part of the jawbone it also provides the jawbone with the stimulation it needs to stay healthy.

Don’t you want to feel confident in your appearance again? Don’t you want to enjoy your favorite foods without worrying? If you said yes, then it’s time to schedule an appointment with our Grand Rapids, MI, dental team to find out if you are the ideal candidate for implants.
