Pregnancy is such a joyous time in your life. Your family is growing, you’re going to be parents — again or for the first time — and you’ve never been more excited. While most pregnant women do a great job of scheduling and keeping all of their doctor’s appointments — it is vital to be equally diligent about seeing your dentist regularly as well.
Maintaining your oral health during your pregnancy is not only beneficial for your health, but also affects the health of your baby. The American Academy of Periodontology and most dentists encourage moms-to-be to visit their dentist as early in their pregnancy as possible.
During the first trimester, many pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting from morning sickness — making it even more important to brush frequently to prevent stomach acid from damaging enamel. In addition, hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to several oral health issues. Nearly 50% of all pregnancies are plagued by the dangers of pregnancy gingivitis. Concerns about this oral health issue are greatly lessened when monitored by your dentist and the gingivitis usually subsides shortly after giving birth. However, if visits to your dentist are missed, and treatment is not received when needed, pregnancy gingivitis can progress into a more serious problem and even a potentially scary situation for the baby.
Left untreated, pregnancy gingivitis can progress into periodontitis — an advanced form of gum disease — that can lead to preterm labor and low birth-weight babies. In fact, mothers who have periodontal disease are seven times more likely to have preterm labor.
Regular dental care is important all the time, and even more so during pregnancy. Maintaining regularly scheduled dental visits is not only safe for expectant mothers but will improve the oral health of moms-to-be and the health of the baby — helping to promote a safer pregnancy.
